Tuesday...back to Mexico

Katie and I made arrangements with hand signals, a little english and spanish, and with the help of the translator on my phone, to meet Erika and the girls for lunch at 1PM at the Pizza Restaurant on the main street in Progreso.

Sure enough at 1PM Erika and the girls showed up and the fun began. Erika indicated that she was going to go and leave the girls with us. We had no idea where she was going or how long she would be. We thought we inherited two daughters.

The girls had their hair in braids and were dressed up for the occasion. They looked so cute!

 to be continued...

After they each devoured a small pizza, they came around and gave us each a hug, then went to the back of the restaurant where there was a kids play area. The trampoline was their favorite and they played on that for about 45 minutes. They had great fun!

Katie and I were sitting there wondering when/if mom Erika was coming back. We managed to communicate with the girls that we could go and find mom, and could do that by walking.

Off we went, with each of them holding our hand. We went about a block and Karelly indicated we had to cross the street, then about another half block and they led us into a pharmacy. Sure enough there was mom standing at the end of the counter. She did not look concerned that we had absconded with the girls, as we were gone at least and hour and a half.

The good part of this is, that we found out that the lady who owns the pharmacy is Erika's friend, and she speaks pretty good english. I had written out and translated online a letter for Erika, about her looking for a house to purchase if she wanted to stay in Progreso. She read it on Katie's tablet. After she read it, we were able with the help of the pharmacist, to determine whether she wanted the family to stay in Progreso, and the fact that she would look for a house to buy and we would help her.

We were able to learn that the girls were out of school all this week, so we made arrangments to meet at the pharmacy again on thursday at noon. Otherwise the girls are in school every day from 8 to 4, so it would be difficult for us to see them. Erika said on the days we wanted to come she would make arrangements with the teacher to take them out early.

So our fun day was over, and Katie and I walked back over the bridge. We arrived at customs and Katie went first. Ahh that suspicious Katie!

to be continued....

The customs agent started to go through Katie's bags, and I could tell they were having a conversation about some drugs Katie had purchased at the Pharmacy. I could hear her telling Katie she could only bring across 50 pills, and that she could either go back to Mexico and dispose of the excess or go back and get your money back. After that conversation she went through Katie's camera bag and pulled out another vial of pills that the pharmacist had given Katie for free. Oops, Katie had forgotten about those. The agent was right at the end of her shift luckily, so she told Katie that she was giving her a warning but next time there would be penalties.

Com'n Katie, that is the second time in two days you almost got us arrested at the border...hahahaha!

The 50 pill maximum per person, which never used to exist, is certainly not a good thing for the town of Progreso. Lots of Winter Texans would come to progreso to get all their medication needs. This was especially true for Americans who pay a lot more for prescriptions than we do in Canada. I doubt whether they will make continuous trips across to get more than 50 pills each.

Katie and I went to the China and seafood buffet in Mcallen for supper, and then it was home for relaxation for the rest of the night.

more later....
